But if you’re having a moment and wondering about the health of your hair, check out some expert advice by our Creative Director Sheenon Olson.
How do I Know if my Hair is Healthy?
A great indicator of your hair’s health is how porous it is. Sheenon Olson, celebrity hairstylist and creative director of Atma Beauty shared his insight on this healthy hair test with Stylecaster.com. We’ve summed up his advice for you below!
What is Porosity?
Porosity? What does that even mean anyway? The answer is simple, your hair’s porosity determines how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture.
Low Porosity Hair
Low porosity hair doesn’t absorb moisture very quickly. However, it does retain the moisture that it absorbs.
High Porosity Hair
High porosity hair is the opposite. It absorbs moisture very quickly, but it loses it just as fast. The bad news is that this usually indicates that the hair is damaged from heat styling or coloring.
Is it Possible to Have Both?
Yes. Sections of your hair could be more porous than others depending on the processes you have done in the past, for example, ombre coloring.
How to Test Your Hair’s Porosity
“One way to determine your hair’s porosity is to take a few strands from your comb and drop them into a glass of water. If your hair floats for several minutes, your hair’s porosity is likely low, as it’s not absorbing enough water to sink. If your hair falls to the middle or bottom of the glass, this indicates high porosity.” - Sheenon Olson for Stylecaster.com.
How to Promote Healthy hair?
For low porosity hair:
“Avoid products with protein, which will make your hair more brittle,” Olson says.”I also recommend light products so build up doesn’t become an issue.” - Sheenon Olson for Stylecaster.com.
For high porosity hair:
“You want to use products that will not only add moisture but that will also close the cuticle,” Olson says. - Sheenon Olson for Stylecaster.com.
